No Place To Live

Synopsis

This film looks into the housing issues facing urban Chicago now and in the future and at the historical reasons behind the current affordable housing crunch in metropolitan Chicago. It looks at the challenges and solutions that workers, employers, communities and public policy makers must consider in the years ahead.

Impact

The film was made by the Chicago Video Project, which brings the power of professional video production to advocacy groups, community development organizations, labor unions, foundations, and others across the country working to promote social and economic justice. The filmmaker, Bruce Orenstein, is Executive Director of the Chicago Video Project.

It was financed by the Chicago Community Trust which gave a grant of $25,000. The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has funded several documentary projects about Chicago Housing Authority reform and the Foundation provided general operating support for the Chicago Video Project. The Wieboldt Foundation also provided general operating support to the Chicago Video Project.

The programme was initially broadcast on WTTW11, the US’s most-watched public television station, as part of ‘Chicago Matters’, the longest running multimedia public affairs series in the US. Chicago Matters is funded by The Chicago Community Trust, metropolitan Chicago's community foundation.

No Place to Live launched a five-part series on Chicago’s problems with affordable housing. It also led to serious debate in Chicago about the housing crisis.
