Blue Water Empire is a three part dramatised documentary series on the unique culture and incredible history of the Torres Strait Islands. The series is both fascinating and compelling, featuring powerful characters.  Blue Water Empire is chronological, starting pre-colonisation and covering the all pervasive impact of the arrival of the Europeans into the Islands. Following the missionaries, came the pearling era with a rush of men and women from around the world to the Torres Straits. World War 2 brought devasting change to the Straits and was followed by mass migration to mainland Australia. More recent times has seen an explosion of social activism, particularly the fight for recognistion and sea rights that continues to this day. Blue Water Empire is a high quality, compelling series for primetime broadcast.

How does the project meet the aims of a philanthropic foundation?

The Torres Strait Islands are a largely unknown part of Australia. Torres Strait Islanders are Melanesian with a distinct culture from mainland Aboriginal peoples. The majority of Australians are unaware of the amazing history of the Torres Strait Islands. Blue Water Empire tells a history that values and explores the cause of social justice in Australia. The Series is an important national document for both broadcast and the Educational sector.
Aims & Objectives

What outcomes do you hope to achieve by making this film and how will you measure its impact?

To tell a largely unknown Indigenous history that aims to rebalance our sense of national identity.
To create a high quality series that will have a wide Educational release.
To engender a sense of pride in Torres Strait Islanders about their history and culture.
We will measure the impact of the series by its television ratings, critical response and educational take up.

What is your education and outreach strategy?

We will create a significant Educational strategy for schools and tertiary institutions across the nation. This will include enhanced curriculum materials and digital elements. There is huge potential for Outreach partners on Blue Water Empire. We have already built ongoing relationships with key stakeholders such as the Torres Strait Regional Authority and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council.
