Tips for shooting a documentary on a mobile device

Most students and schools these days have access to mobile devices, whether that be a kit of iPads or phones in students pockets. Although many schools have strict device use policies, using devices for defined projects like filmmaking, allows teachers to demonstrate responsible use of technology and digital literacy.

Before we launch into some really handy videos, it's worth noting some key factors to consider when making documentaries on devices at school:

  • First of all check your school policy for device use, and ensure you and all your students know how they can use either their own devices or the devices provided by the school. Make sure they understand what privacy is, where they are allowed to film and who they are allowed to film
  • Know who in the class you have permission to film and who does not. It's also important to understand how and where the footage or film will be distributed as this will have bearing on permissions. For those who do not have permission to be filmed, make sure they are assigned a role behind the camera (Director, camera, sound etc)
  • Pre-load all the apps you need onto devices to save time and hassle, check that devices have enough memory available, and are powered up and ready to go
  • Understand your workflow if footage will be shared between devices, or if you need to access music or graphics from another source
  • Do you need wifi and is it working?
Now that's out of the way, onto the fun stuff. Here are three of our favourite videos and resources that can support you teaching filmmaking on a mobile device:
